Term life insurance covers you for a set number of years, usually 10 to 30. You pay a fixed monthly premium, and if you die during the term your beneficiary receives a tax-free lump sum. It costs far less than permanent life insurance because the coverage ends when the term does.

Who term life is for

Built for the years your family needs you most

Term life fits the seasons of life when losing your income would hurt the most.

Parents with young kids

Replace years of income so your family keeps its home, its routine and its plans for college.

Homeowners with a mortgage

Match the term to your loan so the house is paid off and nobody inherits the debt if you are gone.

Breadwinners and owners

Cover lost income, a business loan or a partner buyout for exactly as long as it matters.

Choose your term length

Match the coverage to the years you need it

The dots show the tradeoff: a longer term costs a little more each month but locks your low rate for longer.

10-Year
Lowest premium
Monthly premium
Years of protection

The cheapest way to cover a short window of risk before it passes.

Best for: a short-term debt, a business loan or a few years until retirement savings take over.
MOST CHOSEN
20-Year
Balanced pick
Monthly premium
Years of protection

Enough time to raise kids and pay down most of a mortgage, at a rate most families can afford.

Best for: parents covering the years their children are still at home.
30-Year
Longest lock
Monthly premium
Years of protection

Locks a low rate for decades, so a health change later never raises your price.

Best for: young parents and anyone with a new 30-year mortgage.
Return of Premium
Money back option
Monthly premium
Refund if you outlive it

Costs more each month, but refunds the premiums you paid if you outlive the term.

Best for: people who want protection and their money back if they never use it.

Prefer coverage that never expires? Whole life and universal life last your entire life and build cash value you can borrow against, for a higher premium. A licensed agent can show you term and permanent side by side so you can compare.

What you actually pay

Two things move your term-life rate

Both are checked by a licensed agent at no charge before you decide anything.

Your age and health

These are the biggest levers. The younger and healthier you are, the lower your rate, and tobacco use raises it. Many carriers now approve no-exam coverage in days using your answers and database checks, so locking a rate is faster than most people expect.

Your term and coverage amount

A longer term and a larger death benefit both raise the premium. A common rule of thumb is to cover 10 to 15 times your income plus any debts, so your family can replace your paycheck and clear the mortgage. An agent helps you land on the right number.

Questions

Term life, in plain English

Do I get money back if I outlive my policy?

With a standard term policy, no. It pays out only if you pass away during the term, and that is exactly why term costs so much less than permanent coverage. If getting money back matters to you, a return-of-premium policy refunds the premiums you paid if you outlive the term, for a higher monthly cost.

Does term life build cash value?

No. Term life is pure protection with no savings account attached, which is what keeps the premium low. Permanent policies such as whole life and universal life build cash value you can borrow against, but they cost several times more for the same death benefit.

Do I need a medical exam to qualify?

Not always. Many carriers offer no-exam term coverage with a decision in days, based on your health answers and database checks. Fully underwritten policies may include a short exam and take a few weeks, and they often reward healthy applicants with a lower rate. A licensed agent can point you to the faster or cheaper path.

What happens when my term ends?

Coverage stops and the premiums stop with it. Most policies are renewable, but the new rate is based on your older age and can climb sharply, so many people buy a longer term up front or convert to permanent coverage before the term runs out.

Can I convert term into permanent life later?

Usually yes. Most term policies include a conversion option that lets you switch to a permanent policy without a new medical exam, up to a set age. It is a useful safety valve if your health changes and you want lifelong coverage. Confirm the deadline with your agent.

Can people with health issues still qualify?

Often yes. Rates vary by condition, but many carriers cover well-managed health issues at fair prices, and guaranteed-issue options exist for those who cannot pass standard underwriting. Because each insurer treats conditions differently, an agent shops the carrier most lenient on your situation.
